Spotlight on Georgia: Honoring Our Conductores for Encuentro 2025

As we kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to uplift two conductores from Georgia who embodies the spirit of Encuentro. For those who may not be familiar, the conductores are part of the planning body behind our annual convening. They ensure that Encuentro is as inclusive, intersectional, and reflects the community that we serve — while highlighting the creativity and power across the South.

This year, we are honored to spotlight to conductores whose stories in resilience, visibility, and collective power.

Dr. Christy, and Afro-Latina journalist, earned her doctorate while incarcerated, and used writing to challenge the very system that was trying to silence her. She has witnessed first-hand how storytelling can be a transformative tool to reclaim the narrative, and brought that experience home to her community. As the founder of the Dreaming Justice Project, she organizes to build power and ensure that Afro-Latina trans women will be heard.‍

“My community reminds me daily that our survival is brilliance, and our dreams are blueprints,” she says. “Freedom isn’t abstract — it’s something we build together.”‍

Dr. Christy chose to be a conductora this year because of her deep faith in the collective. She views leadership as more than just a position, but as a responsibility– to those who have paved the way and to those who will follow.

“I became a conductor because leadership is never just personal — it’s about making space for others to step into their own power. This role is my way of giving back what was given to me: mentorship, belief, and the chance to lead. For me, being a conductor is about making sure our movements are carried forward by many hands, not just a few.”

Our second Georgia conductora, Aubrianna Escalera is the co-founder of Poder Unides and LGBTQIA+ Liaison for State Rep. Park Cannon. She is also inspired by the resilience and brilliance of trans and gender-diverse people — especially Black, Latine, and Indigenous communities who have historically been excluded from decision-making spaces.

“Their courage motivates me to keep pushing for equity, visibility, and collective action.”

Aubrianna says her past experience at Encuentro was transformative. Being surrounded by other leaders who shared a commitment to justice and healing reminded her of the power of collaboration and community.

She chose to return as a conductora this year to step into a deeper leadership role by helping to facilitate space, share resources, and support the growth of others while also learning from them.

“I see it as a chance to build strong bridges and nurture leadership development in an approach that is intentional, safe, and cared with love.”

As we honor Hispanic Heritage Month, the stories of Dr. Christy and Aubrianna remind us of the legacies of resistance and creativity that run deep in our communities. Leaders like them ensure Encuentro continues to be a space to center marginalized voices, strengthen our movements, and build freedom together.

Al iniciar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, nos enorgullece resaltar a dos conductoras de Georgia que encarnan el espíritu de Encuentro. Para quienes no estén familiarizadxs, lxs conductores forman parte del cuerpo de planificación detrás de nuestra reunión anual. Se aseguran de que Encuentro sea inclusivo, interseccional y refleje a la comunidad a la que servimos — mientras resaltan la creatividad y el poder que florecen en todo el Sur.

Este año, tenemos el honor de destacar a dos conductoras cuyas historias están enraizadas en la resiliencia, la visibilidad y el poder colectivo.

La Dra. Christy, una periodista afro-latina, obtuvo su doctorado mientras estaba encarcelada y utilizó la escritura para desafiar al mismo sistema que intentaba silenciarla. Ha sido testigo de primera mano de cómo contar nuestras historias puede ser una herramienta transformadora para recuperar la narrativa, y llevó esa experiencia de regreso a su comunidad. Como fundadora del Dreaming Justice Project, impulsa el poder de las mujeres trans afrolatinas para que sus voces sean escuchadas.

“Mi comunidad me recuerda cada día que nuestra supervivencia es brillantez, y que nuestros sueños son planos,” dice. “La libertad no es abstracta — es algo que construimos juntxs.”

La Dra. Christy eligió ser conductora este año por su profunda fe en lo colectivo. Ella ve el liderazgo como algo más que una posición: como una responsabilidad — con quienes han abierto el camino y con quienes vendrán después.

“Me convertí en conductora porque el liderazgo nunca es solo personal — se trata de crear espacio para que otrxs puedan entrar en su propio poder. Este rol es mi manera de devolver lo que otrxs me dieron: mentoría, confianza y la oportunidad de liderar. Para mí, ser conductora no se trata de un puesto, sino de asegurar que nuestros movimientos sean impulsados por muchas manos, no solo unas pocas.”

Nuestra segunda conductora de Georgia, Aubrianna Escalera, cofundadora de Poder Unides y enlace LGBTQIA+ de la Representante Estatal Park Cannon, también se inspira en la resiliencia y brillantez de las personas trans y de género diverso — especialmente de las comunidades Negras, Latinas e Indígenas que históricamente han sido excluidas de los espacios de toma de decisiones.

Aubrianna dice que su experiencia pasada en Encuentro fue transformadora. Estar rodeada de otrxs líderes comprometidos con la justicia y la sanación le recordó el poder de la colaboración y la construcción comunitaria.

Ella eligió regresar como conductora este año para asumir un rol de liderazgo más profundo — ayudando a facilitar espacios, compartir recursos y apoyar el crecimiento de otrxs, al mismo tiempo que aprende de ellxs.

“Lo veo como una oportunidad de construir puentes sólidos y fomentar el desarrollo de liderazgo de una manera intencional, segura y cuidada con amor.”

Al honrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, las historias de la Dra. Christy y Aubrianna nos recuerdan los legados de resistencia y creatividad que corren profundamente en nuestras comunidades. Son líderes como ellas quienes aseguran que Encuentro continúe siendo un espacio para centrar las voces marginadas, fortalecer nuestros movimientos y construir la libertad juntxs.
