This Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day comes at a critical moment for our region. The South continues to be disproportionately impacted by HIV, while LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities are under increasing attack. Grassroots organizations are stepping in to fill the gaps by providing care instead of criminalization, and defending the dignity and safety of those most impacted.
To support this vital work, we are proud to announce the launch of our El Hormiguero Rapid Response Fund. This fund provides awards of up to $1,500 to grassroots organizations across the South, with applications accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. Recipients will also join El Hormiguero, our Southern Latinx Health Policy coalition calls, to strategize, share tools, and strengthen protections across the region.
Among the first recipients of El Hormiguero Rapid Response Fund is the Texas Strike Force, a statewide cross-movement of individuals and organizations ready to take action on behalf of marginalized communities and change the face of politics in Texas.
The Strike Force is proof of what is possible when community steps up. They have organized meetings, educated the public, and led a coalition to oppose harmful changes to the state’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program. And they won. Thanks to the Strike Force’s advocacy, the state Department of State Health Services reversed its decision to change income eligibility requirements, so people living with HIV across Texas will continue to receive life-saving medications.
The Texas Strike Force is just one example of the kind of community-led action that the Rapid Response Fund is designed to support. With small but flexible awards, groups can respond quickly to threats, mobilize community, and protect access to healthcare across the South.
Through El Hormiguero, organizations like the Strike Force also connect with peers across the South to share lessons, replicate strategies, and strengthen our movement.
Grassroots organizations serving LGBTQ+ Latine people living with HIV are encouraged to apply for Rapid Response Fund awards of up to $1,500. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted, with a final deadline of December 15, 2025.
